What reaction is used in automobile airbags? Or is there any reaction that creates a 'cold explsion?

I'm looking for some reaction from a compound or compounds that will create a large quantity of non or low toxic gas in a brief time. I need something that is normally stable but can be triggered by an electronic sensor. I think that something like a an airbag in a car might work I might have to use something that creates less volume mire quickly.
