Idea PREVIEW | (1743 -- 1794 ), French scientist and public servant: the hero of the chemical revolution and a victim of the French Revolution. Lavoisier was brought up in Paris during the most productive years of the philosophes’ movement. He received his secondary education at the collège des Quatre Nations—known as collège Mazarin because it was founded by Cardinal Mazarin. Although he was particularly fond of the mathematics lessons given by Lacaille, a famous astronomer, Lavoisier chose to study law, in keeping with his family tradition.
