Lewis Structures which do not obey the octet rule

Post  milky9311 on Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:29 pm

THere are lewis structures which do not obey the octet rule.

I understand expanded octets for periods from period 3 and down i.e. 4, 5
but i do not understnad molecules such as Bef2 where there are only 4 electrons around the central Be atom.

1. How does Be only have 4 electrons in BeF2
2. How are we supposed to know whether the lewis diagrams are those that do not obey the octet rule?

Thanks
