The Properties of Benzyl chloride

Post  rihanna on Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:58 am

Benzyl chloride is a kind of Colorless to yellow liquid with very strong pungent odour and it has tearing property. Besides, it is soluble in diethyl [ethyl] ether, alcohol, chloroform(WeiKu) and other organic solvent but insoluble in water. It is unstable and combustible, so inhibitors such as propylene oxide or trimethylamine are usually added to prevent polymerization. Above flash point vapour-air mixtures are explosive within the limits noted above. Contact with water produces toxic fumes. What's more, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, water, acids, most common metals, dimethyl sulfoxide. So while storing it, it should be kept with the storage temp. of 0-6°C, and in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated storeroom, away from other oxygenant and food additives.

In general organic chemistry we know the compounds by common name but in overall world IUPAC name. The IUPAC name of benzyl chloride is chloromethyl benzene.
Benzyl chloride is prepared gas-phase photochemical reaction of toluene with chlorine in industry.
Uses of benzyl chloride are :
and many more.

In organic synthesis, benzyl chloride is used for the introduction of the benzyl protecting group for alcohols, yielding the corresponding benzyl ether, and carboxylic acids, yielding the corresponding benzyl ester. Benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) can be prepared by oxidation of benzyl chloride in the presence of alkaline KMnO4

It may be used in the synthesis of amphetamine-class drugs, and for this reason sales of benzyl chloride are monitored as a List II drug precursor chemical by the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
