Organic compounds:What WERE they?

Post  Thesci3141 on Tue Dec 28, 2010 10:06 pm

The word "ORGANIC" seems to have been used for the first time in 1777. It was used to describe substances found in or derived from living organisms. For many years it was believed that they were different from inorganic substances in two ways.1.they (organics) did not obey the laws of combination that inorganics did.2. They were the products of a vital force and could NOT be made in the lab. In 1814 Berzelius by combustion analysis that organics Did obey the laws of combination. IF you are thinking that the synthesis of urea in 1828 byWohler disproved the "vital force" idea, you are wrong. He used lead cyanate obtained from an animal source, so he didn't disturb the vital force idea. A few years later Kolbe synthesized acetic acid from substances that could be DIRECTLY produced from the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen! No "VITAL" force was essential!
