Hello, A positive test for the Haloform test is the production of A precipitate (iodoform.yellowish-white with A distincive smell. Methanol will NOT give this result.Ethanol will. There is something wrong with your experiment. Double check your alcohol. If in doupt as to the kimd of alcohol, heat a piece of coiled copper wire to glowing hot and plunge into alcohol. Methanol in this procedure will form formaldehyde. You will smell this easily. Were talking test tube quantitys here. I actually just tried this experiment (haloform,(iodoform) test in my lab with methanol. I did not get the resulys you did. come back. RANDY
